Frequently asked questions
Still unsure how RPL works for your situation? Browse the most common questions below, or see the full list.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you have gained through employment, training, volunteering and life experience. If your experience meets the requirements of an Australian qualification, you may receive credit for some or all units without completing the full course again.
The process generally involves an initial eligibility assessment, evidence collection, document submission and assessment against the relevant qualification requirements. An assessor may request additional documents, conduct an interview, contact referees or arrange a practical assessment before making the final decision.
No. RPL Certify provides guidance, document support and application management services. Qualifications are assessed and issued only by an appropriately registered training organisation, where the applicant meets all assessment requirements.
Evidence may include employment reference letters, job descriptions, payslips or contracts, training certificates, work samples, photos or videos of tasks performed, licences or tickets, supervisor declarations, and your resume. The required evidence depends on the qualification and your individual experience.
Yes. Relevant overseas employment, training and practical experience may be considered. Your evidence must be genuine, verifiable and relevant to the Australian qualification being assessed. Documents not written in English may require certified translations.
There is no single experience requirement that applies to every qualification. The amount and type of experience required depends on the qualification, industry and units of competency, but applicants generally need substantial, recent and relevant experience across the key duties covered.
No. RPL outcomes cannot be guaranteed. The final decision is made by the registered training organisation and qualified assessor after reviewing your evidence and assessing your competency against the qualification requirements.
A practical assessment may be required, particularly for trade, technical, construction, automotive, hospitality, health or other hands-on qualifications. This may be completed through workplace observation, video demonstration, online assessment or an in-person practical assessment.
You may be asked to provide additional documents, complete an interview, submit further work samples or undertake a practical assessment. In some cases, gap training may be recommended for units where sufficient competency cannot be demonstrated.
Yes. You can upload your documents securely through the RPL Certify online portal. Your case team can review your submission and advise you if any documents are missing, unclear or require further explanation.
You can track the progress of your application through your online dashboard, which may show your current application stage, submitted documents, outstanding requirements, assessor requests and important updates.
Yes. You can communicate with your assigned case officer through the online portal, using the messaging system to ask questions, receive document requests and obtain updates about your application.
No. An RPL qualification does not automatically guarantee employment, occupational licensing, skills assessment approval or a visa outcome. Employers, licensing authorities and government departments apply their own eligibility requirements, and applicants should obtain independent professional advice where relevant.
RPL Certify takes the security and confidentiality of your information seriously. Documents are stored using secure systems and accessed only by authorised personnel. Information may be shared with the relevant RTO, assessor or service provider where required, and is handled in accordance with applicable privacy requirements and our privacy policy.
